Relationships, relationships, relationships! This is the key to ANY classroom and starting now can set the tone for your entire school year. It's back to school season and our lists are LONG! Trust me..I get it! I feel like every time I'm crossing things off my list, a new list is already forming!
As our first week of school wraps up, I always like to get feedback from my students. I want to know how they're feeling about their new classroom, teacher, grade level, and just school in general. I have found that many times a student may be really honest on a piece of paper about something they may not tell you about in person. A first week feels student survey is one of my favorite relationship pieces during the back to school crazy.
This survey is quick for my students to self-assess where they are and how they feel about the first week back. Once I have all of the surveys, I take 1-2 minutes (no literally!) to meet individually with each student about their answers. If they rated their first week a 4, we talk about why. If they rated it a 10, we also talk about why! We quickly go over each answer the put so they know I am reading them and I care about their answers. Some questions/answers may take a little more time to go over depending on the student's answer, but that time with them is valuable.
The survey and quick one on one conference with me communicates to them that I want to have a trusting relationship with them. A lot of times students write answers that really do need some attention and discussion. They feel seen, heard, and cared about. This is my ultimate goal as their teacher!
I highly recommend doing this quick survey with your students the first or second week of school! You won't regret it! Grab the free download below!
Happy teaching!

This is so awesome! Thank you for sharing (and as a FREE resource even). Quick question, just to gauge it all…what did you have your other students working on or doing while you met with each student? Just trying to get a visual so I can plan this for my own classroom (we have 1.5 more weeks till we start).
