The Summer Games are a great way to end the year with a high-interest research project that is DONE FOR YOU! Engage students in an interesting topic that will make the end of the year (or even summer school) a little more interesting.
RESEARCH PROJECT COMPONENTS
The Summer Games research project creates opportunities for students to research 23 sports specific to the Summer Games. Each Olympic sport has a linked video and article. Students will answer questions from the videos and articles – and don't worry, there's an answer key!
After answering the comprehension questions, students will have the opportunity to research additional info about the Olympic events in the Summer Olympics.
- How to Play
- History & Background
- 3 Interesting Facts
- Photo of the sport
There are also extension activities for fast finishers or to further their understanding.
- Compare and Contrast Sports- students compare and contrast two summer sports
- Olympic Games Vocab- match the word with its picture and/or definition
- Writing Prompts
- Research about the Paralympics
Of course, there are fun extras to add in. Premade rubrics as well as editable ones. The rubrics are a great guide for students to ensure they complete all required elements and make grading a snap for you! Slides to display information in different ways, with the option to add your own text for directions or steps if needed. Of course, there are swag tags for students!
HOW TO USE IN THE CLASSROOM
The Summer Games Digital Research Project is ready to use!
There are so many ways to incorporate the digital research project into your classroom.
- Small Groups – Group students together and create an opportunity to collaboratively learn about a new and exciting topic. Small groups allow students to divide and conquer. They also have someone to share fascinating new information or bounce ideas off of if they aren't sure about something.
- Independent work – Decide how many slides (just a few or all of them) you would like each student to complete. This allows the project to last a class period or even over a week. You have the flexibility to make the project work for you!
- Partnerships – A great way to complete work and (hopefully) make sure both students are doing their fair share of the work. Looking for a new way to pair students, check out these FREE partner cards!

- Stations – Station planning has never been easier! Assign and let the learning begin! The research project could be a rotation for a week or even longer. Since the slides are in Google, the progress is saved and students can come back to it again and again.
This Summer Games digital research project is perfect to use at the end of the year to engage students and enhance their reading comprehension, writing, and research skills. This done for you research project is super easy to add to your lesson plans! Just assign and go. However you use it, it's a win-win!
